ARGUMENT A

Person A: “Why are we Canadians fighting in Afghanistan?”

Person B: “To punish the Taliban for 9/11.”

Person A: “But al-Qaida was responsible. Why don’t we fight them?”

Person B: “They’re not important.”





ARGUMENT B

Person A: “Why are we Canadians fighting in Afghanistan?”

Person B: “To stop the insurgents! To bring them democracy!”

Person A: “How is our business to police Afghanistan?”

Person B: “We need to protect democracy! We need to stop the slaughter!”

Person A: “So, will we sent troops to Darfur, to bring democracy and stop the slaughter?”

Person B: “What for? We have no business in Darfur. It’s not our job to solve their problems.”

Person A: “Then why is it our business in Afghanistan?”

Person B: “You’re anti-democratic. You’re a cut & runner. You’re helping the enemy.”



ARGUMENT C

Person A: “How can we ever win in Afghanistan?”

Person B: “We need to wipe out the Taliban.”

Person A: “Wipe them out? How?”

Person B: “Kill every last one of them.”

Person A: “Isn’t that genocide?”

Person B: “So what? Who cares?”




ARGUMENT D

Person A: “Why are we Canadians fighting in Afghanistan?”

Person B: “To bring them democracy! They need to be free!”

Person A: “So you really care that strongly about the Afghan people?”

Person B: “Those fucking ragheads? Fuck no!”




It really sucks that Person B is in charge here in Canada.



The real answer – nobody wants to build a pipeline through Darfur.
That’s why Canada is in Afghanistan.

But the truth really messes with our self-delusions.
